Since 1994 over 60,000 students across the whole of the north-east have benefited from the ‘If I Can You Can’ programme.
This interactive session previously aimed at Year 8 classes has been developed for Year 10 audiences.
The programme is delivered by a team of outside facilitators to the whole year group and introduces students to enterprise and employability through an interactive and fun format.
General Information
The session is based around a giant ‘Monopoly’ style board, with squares depicting a holiday complex. Teams of students are invited to imagine they are working at the complex over the holidays and move around the different departments in order to gain experience. By correctly answering questions teams collect ‘award’ and ‘forfeit’ cards, themed around the holiday complex. All teams also take part in activities designed to develop enterprise capability, challenge employability skills, increase confidence and raise awareness of diversity and equal opportunities.
Every student in Year 10 participated in either a morning or afternoon session. Skills displayed by the students included problem solving, leadership, self reliance and interviewing. Discussion around stereotyping and rights and responsibilities in the workplace proved to be very interesting. Throughout the sessions Year 10 students were a credit to Hookergate School, their behaviour was exemplary, and the level of commitment when supporting each other in team activities was a pleasure to observe. Without exception the visiting speakers were not only informative but also light-hearted and patient.
Each student completed an evaluation sheet, which identified that all who took part found the day very worthwhile.
